Summerside, PEI's Nathan Wiley first earned acclaim for his 2002 debut Bottom Dollar, which won the East Coast Music Award for Alternative Album of the Year, and was chosen by Billboard Magazine as one of the top ten albums of 2002.  His blend of classic sounds with a modern, slightly world weary perspective struck a chord with listeners, as songs full of subtle melodies and lyrics addressing those unquenchable yearnings inside all of us wormed their way into their ears.  In the years that followed, Wiley has made good on the promise of Bottom Dollar with the ECMA-winning sophomore album High Low (2004), the Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) produced effort, The City Destroyed Me (2007), Bandits (2015) and most recently Modern Magic, which took home Music PEI's 'album of the year' and 'songwriter of the year' as well as another ECMA nomination.  Nathan recently scored the feature film, Nightblooms and has shared the stage with artists like Blue Rodeo, Sarah Harmer, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Matt Mays, Ron Sexsmith and many more, while his work has appeared on tv, film and stage.

TWO SHOWS:

Thursday July 25th, 2024

Showtime 7 pm

 & Sunday July 28th, 2024  MATINEE

Showtime 2pm

Tickets $25. + HST

It's August 1919, and local Women's Institute activist, Miss Bessie Carruthers of Kent Street in Charlottetown, has a very special guest for her weekly Study Club gathering:  British musician, composer and renowned suffragette, Miss Ethel Smyth.

While this is a fictional event, the characters are based on actual women.  Bessie Carruthers played an important role in persuading political leaders of the era to grant women the right to vote on PEI.

Produced by local company Pirate Jenny Productions, The Bessie Carruthers Study Club stars Suzanne Campbell as the titular suffragette with Jennifer King as English composer Ethel Smyth.  Mezzo-soprano Suzanne Campbell teaches singing to students of all ages, appears as a frequent soloist around the Island, and sings as a member of the award-winning women's vocal ensemble, Sirens, who recently won Choral Recording of the Year at the 2023 ECMAs.  Halifax based Jennifer King is a pianist, educator, host of Cecilia Concerts Sensory Accessible Concert series at Halifax's Central Library and a recording artist.  Her latest recording, O Mistress Moon:  Canadian Edition was the recipient of the 2023 ECMA Classical Recording of the Year.  This play performance also won PEI's Heritage Recognition Award for 2024.

" a playfully thoughtful and amusing look back at women's earlier struggles, made more appealing by the Campbell/King duo's fine singing and King's formidable piano skills.  Their slate of period tunes includes several audience sing-along numbers, making the show more immersive and fun."

           - Sean McQuaid, The Buzz

Blue Anderson is made up of seasoned musicians each adding their own experience and flavour for a unique sound.  Core members Alisa and Darrell Anderson are finally bringing their unique styles together for an elegant performance of original and timeless Jazz and Blues classics from the 1930's to today.

With Alisa's enchanting vocals and stylish guitar, and Darrell's expert bass licks and solid grooves, Blue Anderson is pushing musical boundaries and evoking an emotional journey through scenes of romantic nostalgia that everyone can relate to!
